Many of our customers have asked for tips and guidance on how to properly store, handle, and enjoy our peaches, pears, and honey. Here are a few tips to help you maximize your enjoyment!
Peach Handling Instructions
- As soon as you receive your peaches, go through the entire box to see if any are already soft to the touch. If the tip of your thumb makes a soft indention at the top of the peach, that means it's ripe enough to eat! Some peaches in your box may still be firm--that is normal.
- Put all remaining peaches back in the box or lay them out on the counter, storing them at cool, air-conditioned room temperature.
- Check your box daily to sort out peaches that are soft and ready to eat. Enjoy!
- If you need to make your ripened peaches last longer, you can store them in refrigeration to preserve them another 1-3 days after they have ripened.
Pear Handling Instructions
- Pears are picked green and firm, but will soften and turn slightly yellow when they are ready to eat.
- Pears give off a natural gas that helps them ripen, so it's good to keep them all together in their box with the lid on it or together in a bowl with a newspaper laying on top of it to encourage ripening. (Never keep them in plastic containers or plastic bags because they will not ripen properly and will turn to mush.)
- Keep your pears in their box and begin checking on them daily about a week after you bring them home. As they begin to turn yellow and indent with soft pressure from the tip of your thumb, they're ripe enough to eat. (Some people enjoy pears at varying stages of ripeness, from yellowish-green to golden yellow.)
- If you need to make your ripened pears last longer, you can store them in the refrigerator while they are still green, then take them out to ripen following the steps above. If you would like 2 ripe pears every 3rd day, then take 2 green pears out of the refrigerator every 3rd day, putting them with the ones you took out previously and watch them ripen 2 at a time, about every 3rd day!
Honey Handling Instructions
- There is no need to refrigerate our honey.
- Our pure, raw, unfiltered, unpasteurized Colorado honey will naturally crystalize over time. That means it's real!
- Never put honey in the microwave. This will kill the honey's natural culture and minimize its health benefits.
- If you find your jar of honey has begun to crystalize, here are a couple different methods we use to re-liquify:
- Place your jar of honey in a pot of warm (not hot) water on the stove. Heat until liquid. Be careful not to boil your water!
- Place your jar of honey in the back window of your hot, parked car during the summer. The heat will naturally re-liquify your honey!
- Place your jar of honey in your oven on the lowest setting possible for a couple of hours.
